Cancun is the most famous Mexican tourist destination, founded in 1974, Cancun is a destination with a vast diversity of activities and tourist attractions to enjoy in your next trip to Mexico. To help you decide and organize an itinerary, we show you the top 10 things to do in Cancun.
1. Cancun beaches.
With a gorgeous blue turquoise and white sand of the Caribbean sea, all the beaches in Cancun are photogenic. Go to Playa Delfines and relax, go to Playa Tortugas or Playa Ballenas to do water-sports or stay in the comfort of Playa Las Perlas. In Cancun, there is a beach for every taste and need.
Get to Holbox Island is not easy, but it is worth it (How to get to Holbox). Holbox still keeps the charm of a small fishing village, its peacefulness, purity, and beauty are already scarce in the Mexican Caribbean. Besides, this is the home of the majestic whale shark.
3. Hotel zone (Zona hotelera).
The Hotel zone is Cancun center of all tourist services, all of the most famous and biggest resorts are located here: Hyatt Zilara, Secrets The Vine, Hard Rock Hotel, Barcelo Costa Cancun, among others; as well as most of the nightclubs. A night partying at Coco Bongo, Mandalas or The city is going to be hard to forget …or remember 😉 .
4. Playa del Carmen and Tulum.
Playa del Carmen is the main destination of the Riviera Maya. If you want to escape the bustle of Cancun for a day or two, Playa del Carmen is a good option, the Quinta Avenida (Playa del Carmen’s Fifth Avenue) is a great place to go shopping or relax, and the gastronomic offer is top level. Tulum, on the other hand, counts with some of the most beautiful beaches in the Riviera Maya and outstanding beachfront Mayan ruins.
5. El Rey, archeological site.
El Rey (Literally: The King) is a small Mayan archeological site that frequently goes unnoticed, but if you are interested in the Mayan civilization as much as me, you are going to enjoy walking around its old buildings in great peace. Also, El Rey is located near the hotel zone, so is not difficult to get there.
6. Isla Mujeres.
Isla Mujeres (Literally: Island of Women) is located 6 km from Cancun by Ferry. Isla Mujeres is an important destination in itself and also has a big offer of services and activities. A must-see is Playa Norte, one of the most beautiful beaches in the Mexican Caribbean.
Xcaret is the most famous Mexican theme park (locals call it “the Disneyland of the Caribbean”), an authentic paradise with an exhibition of Mexican culture and all kind of water activities. Check out our mini guide: The top ten things to do in Xcaret to get the most out of your ticket.

Among the many points of interest are: the grand Kukulkán castle, the Sacred Cenote, the Mayan observatory and the great ball court.
10. Nichupte Lagoon.
Between the hotel zone and Cancun city is the Nichupte Lagoon. This small oasis in the middle of several resorts and tourist developments is full of wildlife: Mangle, crocodiles, white turtles, leopard frogs, iguanas and an endless native flora and fauna are an excellent excuse to visit it. The most common way to visit the lagoon is through a tour operator. If you like extreme sports, here you can try flyboarding.
